...the Cincinnati Base Ball Club, through an agent, some time last August, signed a contract with... Ewing to play base ball in Cincinnati next season at $1,600 for six months. Afterward the amount was raised to $1,700. It now appears that this same Ewing used the faith of the Cincinnati Club to further his own ends, and by treating his signed contract with them as a “bidder,” succeeded in getting a larger and later offer from a New York Club, which, contrary to the rules of honesty and decency, he accepted and entered into a second contract with the New York parties.
