Text	[from an interview of Spalding] An agreement has always existed between clubs of the League that no players shall be approached or signed until the close of the season. [N.B. This is not true.] This left all the players unsigned, and all the league clubs at the mercy of those of the American Association. The latter took advantage of this, and sent their agents along to see our players. Williamson was the only man in the Chicago nine found willing to leave, and he signed with the Alleghenys. At the close of the season, and of his own free will, he signed a contract to continue in the service of the Chicago Club. In signing him we paid no attention to the claim of the Alleghenys, for in the first place they had not considered our claim.
