The one point I can make from my studies of early IL baseball is that population and baseball followed the railroad lines. Much of this can be attributed to the fact that small town rivalries played such a key part in propagating the game, and that teams needed to be able to travel rapidly to the rival town in order to play a game and return the same day (thus not missing an extra day of work).
