Evansville Daily Journal, Nov. 23, 1859: "The Ball Club proposes having a game of ball on Thursday afternoon, at their usual play ground, near the old graveyard. A cordial invitation is extended to all who can swing a bat or catch a ball.." Is this an 1859 baseball reference? Or is it town ball?

The EDJ, May 28, 1860 under the heading "Town Ball" reports on a game between the single and married men of the Evansville Town Ball Club. Same, Nov. 17, 1860 has an ad for the meeting of the Hoosier Town Ball Club, William H. Axe, secretary.
