The first game played in Texas may have been played by soldiers of Zachary Taylor’s army, in camp near Corpus Christi, Texas during the Mexican War. See Cesar Gonzalez Gomez, “March, Conquest, and Play Ball: The Game in the Mexican-American War, 1846-1848,” Base Ball, Fall 2011, pp. 13-22.

Corpus Christi (1860 pop. about 150) is about 150 miles SE of San Antonio and on the Gulf of Mexico.
